Shipping Goods from the UK to the Netherlands: What You Need to Know
The Netherlands is one of the UK’s most important trading partners, and the route between them is one of the busiest freight corridors in Europe. This guide covers how UK-to-Netherlands shipping works today, what the customs process looks like, and what to expect on costs and transit times.
The UK–Netherlands Trade Route
The Netherlands handles more EU-UK freight by volume than almost any other country. Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe, and a significant proportion of UK goods that end up elsewhere in the EU pass through Dutch logistics infrastructure at some point.
For direct UK–Netherlands shipments, road freight is the dominant mode. Most cargo travels by truck via the Channel — either through the Eurotunnel at Folkestone or by ferry from Dover, Harwich, or Hull into Rotterdam or the Hook of Holland. The crossing itself is short; it’s the collection, customs clearance, and final delivery that determine your overall transit time.
Air freight is available for urgent or high-value shipments, with direct services between UK airports and Amsterdam Schiphol. For most palletised or general cargo, road is the right call on cost.
Customs: How It Works Post-Brexit
The UK left the EU Single Market and Customs Union at the end of 2020. That means every shipment from the UK to the Netherlands is now a customs export from the UK and a customs import into the EU. There are no exceptions, regardless of what you’re shipping or who you’re shipping it to.
This isn’t as complicated as it sounds, but it does require the right paperwork.
What you need to ship from the UK to the Netherlands:
Commercial invoice — the most important document. It must include a clear description of the goods (not “spare parts” or “miscellaneous items” — be specific), quantity, unit value, total value, currency, and country of origin. Your freight forwarder uses this to make the customs declaration. If it’s wrong or vague, the shipment gets held.
Packing list — an itemised list of everything in the consignment, with weights and dimensions per package or pallet.
HS (commodity) code — the tariff classification for your goods. This determines what rate of EU import duty applies in the Netherlands. If you’re not sure of the correct code, ask before you ship. An incorrect classification can result in the wrong duty being applied or a customs hold.
EORI number — you need a UK EORI number to export. Your Dutch customer or recipient needs an EU EORI number to import. Without both, the shipment won’t clear.
Statement of origin — if your goods are of UK origin, your Dutch customer may be able to claim zero or reduced import duty under the UK–EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA). To do this, you need to include a statement of origin on your commercial invoice. Without it, standard EU duty rates apply even if your goods qualify.
One thing worth knowing about the Netherlands specifically: Dutch customs (Douane) is generally efficient, and Rotterdam is a well-oiled machine for high volumes of import traffic. Clearance is typically fast when the documentation is complete and correct.
Shipping Options: Road Freight and Groupage
Groupage (LCL road freight) is the standard option for most SME shipments to the Netherlands. Your cargo shares trailer space with other freight heading in the same direction, and you pay for the space you use. For 1–6 pallets, groupage is almost always the most cost-effective option.
We run regular consolidations on the UK–Netherlands lane, which means your cargo moves on a consistent schedule.
Full truck load (FTL) makes sense when you’re moving enough volume to justify a dedicated vehicle — typically 8+ pallets or significant weight. You get faster transit and no other cargo to work around.
Air freight is available for urgent shipments, samples, or high-value goods where speed justifies the higher cost. Amsterdam Schiphol has excellent connections from UK airports. If you need to move something urgently, our air freight service covers UK–Netherlands alongside the rest of Europe.
Transit Times: UK to the Netherlands
Realistic door-to-door transit times:
- Groupage road freight: 2–4 working days
- Full truck load: 1–2 working days
- Air freight: 1–2 working days door-to-door
The Netherlands is one of the closer European destinations from the UK — the Channel crossing from Dover to Hook of Holland takes around 7 hours by ferry, and Eurotunnel is under an hour. Once in the Netherlands, the road network is excellent and most destinations are reachable in a few hours from Rotterdam or Amsterdam.
Customs clearance adds a variable. With clean paperwork, Dutch customs typically processes imports quickly. Problems arise when documentation is incomplete or goods need physical inspection.
What Does It Cost to Ship Pallets to the Netherlands?
Road groupage to the Netherlands is priced on the space your cargo occupies in the trailer — measured in loading metres (LDM) — and weight. You’re charged on whichever produces the higher figure.
To get an accurate quote, you’ll need to provide:
- Number of pallets
- Dimensions of each pallet (length × width × height)
- Gross weight per pallet
- Collection address in the UK
- Delivery address in the Netherlands
On top of the freight rate, your quote should include UK export customs entry and Dutch import customs clearance. If these aren’t itemised separately, ask for them to be. They’re not expensive, but they’re real costs that should be visible before you commit.
Shipping Machinery or Industrial Goods to the Netherlands?
The Netherlands is a major industrial economy and a significant importer of UK-manufactured goods, machinery, and components. If you’re shipping equipment, spare parts, or anything that requires specialist handling or crating, our machinery and spare parts freight service covers the specific requirements for that type of cargo — including documentation, packaging standards, and handling on both ends.
